23 hours travelling round Brno´s jewels

— Kategorie:

Here I am, a person enclosed by car or office, a neverending view of LCD monitors, turning pages of books, magazines, newspapers, and then... PIPPIP - PIPPIP! An SMS announces the visit. A friend from California is approaching Brno. What will I show him in our city? Suddenly I am finding out what a culture barbarian I am! I don't know the popular pubs anymore, or even our history!

Of course I don't hesitate, and I quickly begin making the devil's own script! The simplest idea is to show Zac our city by a sightseeing flight. I check the weather report with my mobile phone, and of course it is very bad...overcast, fog, rain showers, low cloud cover. Suddenly I have to make a new plan! I find myself visiting official pages of our city for historical sites.

Zac is arriving with the EuroCity to the main rail station, and I will be escorting him to our flat. At home, I open a cool beer and offer a little food. We are joined by my sister for cultural support. Thereupon we return to the city and walk in the direction of Zelný trh, the old Cabbage Market. To aid us, I prepared a special hardcopy guide with pictures of places with English descriptions. The first attempt to vist the Capuchin crypt is unsuccessful, as they were having their noon break.

The Old Town hall with twisted turret, wheel, and dragon disappointed us by being open. We were getting our first real physical workout climbing the tower for views of the city. Once we got to the top, I found the actual weather was suitable for our flight, which I quickly verified with the airport by mobile phone.

Our following steps led to our car. And then we are moving directly to airport Turany.

In a short time we are all of us sitting in small Cesna 172 and taking off directly to Brněnské Ivanovice.

The turbulences were beating us in the small plane. We were smart and waited with our lunch for later so we could enjoy the flight.

The pilot is trying our stomachs over motor-racing circuit and than over reservoir too.

Nearby Adamov I am discovering in the woods new, unknown and Ghotic castle.

We viewed the whiteness of the Macocha gorge, village Křtiny, and the  landscape of the cement factory's Mokrá territory. The Peace Monument looked clean, orderly and nice. After flying around the Peace Monument, we landed at Turany airport. Next, we drove to the Peace Monument by car.

After 30 minutes, we are parking at nearby Austerlitz. The old museum is beside the Monument, and the historical tour with projections is new. My sister and I discover that Zac knows the history of the Battle of the Three Emperors better than we two natives.

We return to our flat from Austerlitz. We park the car and head back to the city by train. Our destination is the brewery Pegas. We briefly detour to view the Dům pánů z Kunštátu, but we are all very hungry and quickly continue to Pegas. There, Zac tastes the Czech national dish of knedlo-vepřo-zelo.

We taste all the beers Pegas has to offer. That, in turn, makes us sleepy, so we all leave the pub soon afterwards. During our conversation, Zac delivers "The solution for life motivation is really very simple! No more knedlíky!" We continue around the corner to Jakub church (Jacob Church? Jacob's Church? Jacobbite's Church?), where Gita was hoping to share her favourite memories of the place. What a shame it was to find it closed, but then Zac delivered another quote, "Aááááá, inventůra!"  In neighbouring streets Zac surprises us again with old czech national idioms as "Tuzex" and "VB."

We went through Freedom sqare near Velký špalíček and stopped by Divoká husa. After very quickly filling up on the most important liquids we  approached the Terasy pod Petrovem.

All of us understand how great today´s feat has been, we are all really tired. Petrov Cathedral is very pleasantly illuminated. So we finish our culture trip by the Memorial of Peace.

Our way to home is by tram. Next day we are getting up late. We wont to go to Capuchim crypt and Babinsky Casematy. We are drinking small latte in Vaňkovka and than Zac exactly after 23 hour leaves Brno.

I am thinking that we have beaten the culture record per 23 hours!
